Group Show - One Path – 21st Century Craft
ARTIST STATEMENT
This dress was made to showcase the continuum of the seasons and its relation to fashion. As with the continuum of the seasons, fashion always loops back around, though changes with each iteration. The continuum of fashion, be it the materials used, the length of the skirt, translucency of the colour, or the colour of the season loops back and forth from year to year, century to century. This is reflected in the dress from the beginning of winter, the blooming flowers in spring, the green of summer, the falling leaves of autumn, and finally back to the iciness of winter.
Kelly used recycled materials including the tape and tissue paper from previous projects such as “Connections” as recently seen in the bathroom tissue dresses. Couture can be and IS about the techniques and styles crafted into the end product, not the expense of the materials used. The translucency of the tape and tissues (left lying around from old projects and holidays) has the same visual effect just like the silks and satins used in many high-end
couture.
